To a handful others it was good riddance and they hoped he would never come back. Many Kenyans were disillusioned and thought the anti-corruption war was over and lost.

Four years ago, in 2008, I was raped by a stranger. My girlfriends and I had left a house party to hit a club in Westlands, Nairobi. When I realised that I had left my phone in the friend’s car that had dropped us off, I told my friends I was going to get the phone. I left them at club Changes and walked towards another club, The Gypsies down Electric Avenue, where our pal had parked his car.

At the age of 12, Makena Mugaa was a normal, healthy young girl. She weighed 60kg and her bra size was 34B. Perhaps a little busty for someone who hadn’t quite reached puberty, but perfectly acceptable. She could wear anything she wanted to, and she did. She could also do anything. Then, almost overnight, things changed.

Mkamzee ‘Usha Mali’ Mwatela talks with Judy Mumo about her life, her craft and why she thinks school is overrated

Mkamzee Mwatela, or Usha as many Kenyans now know her from the popular soap MALI, is a study in contradictions. On the one hand she declined to speak to me directly to set up an interview, directing me to her publicist instead (w-o-w)! On the other, as I was steeling myself for prima donna drama during the interview, she turned out to be the sweetest, most accommodating, genuine celebrity I have ever met.

Neema Ntalel talks to Judy Mumo about her rise to fame, her spectacular fall, and how she found healing and restoration.

When most people hear the name Neema Ntalel, the first thing that springs to their minds is “gospel singer” and “Kora award winner”. Sometimes, depending on who you are, it can also mean the scandal of a pregnancy out of wedlock and a miscarriage. Or, according to the rumour mills of the day, a convenient abortion.
